Cut Up a Credit Card

July 2nd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

For the first time in my life I cut up a credit card that was not yet expired! Wow how surprisingly inspiring it felt!

The only bummer was that upon paying bills later I realized that another credit card with a low promotional 1% rater had a minimum due on July 1st...yesterday...a Sunday that I didn't realize. I really hope they don't increase my rater considering the due date was a Sunday. I went first thing this morning to the bank to pay it directly.

Any suggestions, or prior experience in this area?

Congrats on cutting up the card.

As for the late payment, that will most likely jack up your rate unfortunately. How about setting up your accounts to automatically pay at least the minimum from your checking account each month so you don't risk late payments. You can still send in more as you are able, but you would eliminate the risk of this happening again.

It depends. I have been late exactly once in my life. I wrote the check, put the envelope in my coat pocket and went out to mail it and run errands. Two weeks later, I found it in my coat pocket.

I called the cc company and since I had been with them for years, they let it go.

However, that was about 6 years ago and the tactics they use have changed.

Best bet is to call them up, explain what happened and ask for mercy. If not, find another one, they are everywhere.

I believe most companies don't report late payments until 30 days late, so your credit shouldn't be harmed.
